Hans Wallach was an experimental psychologist whose work in perception was ground breaking in many ways. In particular, his work on the kinetic depth effect and adaptation in the perception of depth and distance yielded some very interesting stimuli which we put to use heavily in VT. Though these stimuli may be used in many different ways, we use them to help our patients get a grasp on helping them take control of how they see. These patterns are ambiguous targets, which trigger several potential perceptual interpretations. By shifting from one to another under volitional control, rather than them just changing on their own or by accident, our patients are learning a great lesson which sets the stage for them to be in control. Another key element here is being able to move along the Z-axis and see depth through each channel (eye-brain connection) to similar degrees in either interpretation of the ambiguous figures.
Each of the videos below run just over a minute and can be viewed directly on a computer screen or projected.
